Denver Landscaping Services: Choosing A Garden Style For Your Yard

July 19, 2017

Many people seek Denver landscaping services so they can add a garden to their yard. But, there are many different types of gardens, so you will need to decide which one is right for your lawn. Here are some of the most popular choices:

Vegetable

Your mind may immediately think of bright, colorful flowers when you think of the word “garden,” but some gardens don’t have any flowers at all. If you’re interested in growing your own food and adding more greenery to your yard, a vegetable garden is the perfect choice for you. Here are the easiest vegetables to grow in Colorado.

Desert

Do you want to give your yard a southwestern, desert vibe? If so, consider creating a garden using cacti, succulents, and wood accents. These gardens are bold and will help you set the tone for the rest of your landscaping. Another bonus? Desert-style gardens are low maintenance, so you won’t have to spend your weekend working in your yard.

English

Whereas desert gardens are low maintenance, English-style gardens are the exact opposite. English gardens are characterized by tons of flowers, quiet walkways, and trimmed bushes. If you decide to create this type of garden in your backyard, you should plan on allocating a significant amount of space to it in order to achieve the look. You will also need to commit to either maintaining the bushes on your own or hiring a landscaping company to ensure they remain trimmed at all times.

Tropical

Homeowners also have the option of creating a lush oasis in their backyards with a tropical garden. This style of garden typically consists of water features such as fountains or ponds, plants with large, green leaves, and exotic flowers. Work with your landscaping team to identify bright and bold flowers that will grow well in the Denver climate.

Asian

Asian gardens are known for being simplistic and having clean lines. If you create an Asian garden in your yard, be sure to incorporate small, tranquil water features and lots of stone accents. Also, be willing to dedicate a bit of your time to maintaining the neat and tidy look of your garden.

Butterflies

Some homeowners want to create a garden just so they can attract butterflies to their yards and marvel at their beauty. If this is your dream, it’s important to plant flowers that will quickly draw butterflies into your yard. Find nectar and pollen-rich wildflowers and combine them with dill and milkweed, which are two plants that butterfly larvae feed on. This is the perfect combination to bring butterflies into your garden.

Denver Landscape Design: Tips For Refreshing Your Landscaping

July 12, 2017

Over time, your landscaping may begin to look a little bit dull and outdated. Luckily, you don’t have to rip everything out of your yard and start from scratch if you want to try something new with your landscaping. Instead, focus on refreshing certain parts of the lawn to make the space more vibrant and alive. Here are some Denver landscape design tips for homes that are in need of a refresh:

Clean up the garden.

Have weeds completely taken over your beautiful garden? If you want to restore the beauty of your yard, it’s important to remove these weeds and prevent them from coming back. After the weeds have been removed, apply a fresh layer of mulch in your garden. Using mulch is a great way to brighten up this space, plus mulch also works wonders when it comes to controlling weed growth.

Add a water feature.

Is your yard missing a “wow” feature? If there’s nothing that really catches your eye when you look at your front or backyard, consider adding a water feature. You can install a simple bird bath or fountain if you don’t have a big budget. If you have a larger budget, you may want to talk to your landscaping company about the possibility of installing a pond. All of these water features will quickly become the focal points of your landscaping design, so choose which one you would like wisely. Here are some ideas for water features for any budget.

Plant a garden around your entryway.

There’s no better way to welcome guests into your home than by having them walk past a beautiful, colorful garden on their way to your front door. Caring for a garden may seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be if you choose the right flowers. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time working in your garden, ask your landscaping company to choose low maintenance flowering shrubs and perennials.

Create a gathering space.

Work with your landscaper to design a gathering space for your backyard. If you already have pavers installed in your backyard, creating a gathering space is incredibly simple. All you have to do is choose comfortable seating that is designed for outdoor use. You can even choose a few potted plants to place around the seating area to incorporate more greenery into your design.

If you don’t already have pavers installed and adding them to your yard is out of your budget, find a bench that you can tuck away in a quiet corner of your yard instead. This won’t create the same type of gathering space, but it will instantly refresh the look of your landscaping and give you one more place to sit while you’re outside.

How A Denver Landscaping Company Chooses the Right Mulch For Your Yard

July 5, 2017

Believe it or not, mulch plays an important role in your landscaping. Mulch retains moisture so your plants are able to absorb more water before it begins to evaporate, so it keeps your plants healthy and helps you conserve water. Mulch can also prevent or slow down weed growth so they don’t rapidly take over your yard. To ensure that you reap all of the benefits of mulch, it’s important that you choose the right type for your yard. According to Denver landscaping company My Landscaper, here’s what you should know about the most common types of mulch:

Cypress Mulch

This type of mulch is made from bark stripped from the outside of cypress trees. It is known to hold moisture and retain its color longer than any other type of organic mulch. Because of its durability, you won’t have to lay out new mulch as frequently.

Crushed Pine Needle Mulch

Crushed pine needle mulch provides great coverage and is much easier to spread than other organic mulches, including cypress mulch. It provides more nutrients to the soil than cypress mulch, however it isn’t as durable. So although your plants will receive more nutrients, the mulch will break down fairly quickly and need to be replenished with a fresh layer.

Pine Needle Mulch

This type of mulch is made out of untouched pine needles. Because the pine needles are not processed in any way, this type of mulch is much cheaper than other options. It offers the same benefits as crushed pine needle mulch with one exception: it lasts longer. However, the color made begin to fade away fairly quickly, so keep that in mind as you make your decision.

Bulk Mulch

Whereas cypress mulch is made out of the bark stripped from the outside of cypress trees, bulk mulch is made out of the wood from the interior of cypress trees. If you buy this type of mulch, it’s important that you know it must be removed from the ground before you add a new layer of mulch. Why? Bulk mulch does not break down, so applying a fresh layer of mulch on top of the existing layer will lead to the mulch retaining a lot of moisture from the ground. This could eventually cause mold to grow and could even attract insects and pests.

Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch is colored, so many people are drawn to it when choosing a mulch for their yard. However, this is not a good choice for your home. Rubber mulch is made from pieces of old tires and is dyed before being sold to consumers. If placed in your garden, it will not help your soil retain water. In fact, it will suck up the moisture from the ground and harm your plants. See the rubber mulch concerns.

Common Denver Landscaping Services Terms

June 28, 2017

Are you interested in Denver landscaping services, but you’re not sure how to describe what you’re looking for? This could be because you’re not familiar with many of the common words that landscapers use to describe different plants. To help you communicate with your landscaper, get familiar with these common terms:

Aquatic Plants

Aquatic plants are any plants that grow or live in the water. You may need to discuss adding aquatic plants to your landscaping design if you plan on including a pond or some other type of water feature. See the best plants for your water garden.

Native Plants

A native plant is any type of plant that grows naturally in your area. Many homeowners choose to use native plants in their landscaping design because they don’t require as much maintenance. Some of the plants that are native to the Denver area include Chocolate Flowers, Black-Eyed Susans, Switchgrass, and Sand Cherry shrubs. Ask your landscaper for suggestions on which native plants will fit your landscaping design the best.

Annuals

Some plants are described as annuals, which means that they go through an entire life cycle within one year and then die off. Landscapers often place annuals within flowerbeds to inject a sudden burst of color and brightness.

Biennials

Whereas annual plants go through an entire life cycle within one year, biennials complete a life cycle within two years. In the first year, it is normal for these plants to only grow vegetation. They typically remain unchanged during the cold winter months, and then begin to flower during their second year. After they produce seeds, they will eventually die off.

Deciduous

The term deciduous can be used to describe trees and bushes that shed their leaves at some point in the year, typically during the fall or winter. Some of the most common types of deciduous trees are oak, maple, and hickory trees. You may not like the way these trees look when their leaves have fallen off, but there’s nothing to worry about. This is just temporary, and the leaves will begin to grow back once the seasons change.

Tender Plants

If you hear a landscaper refer to a plant as being tender, this means that it is not able to survive freezing temperatures during the winter.

Evergreen

You may be able to guess what evergreen plants are based on their name alone. Unlike deciduous plants, evergreens do not ever lose their leaves so they will remain green all year long. Adding evergreen plants to your yard is a great way to ensure your landscaping always looks lush and alive regardless of the season. Some of the most common evergreens are pine trees, red cedar trees, and blue spruce trees.

Avoid These Mistakes When Hiring A Landscaping Company in Denver

June 21, 2017

Adding landscaping to your front or backyard can completely transform the look of your home—that is, if it’s done right. If you’re hiring a landscaping company in Denver to transform your yard, make sure that you avoid these common mistakes:

Planting in the wrong place.

When choosing where you should put each plant, make sure that you consider what the plant needs to survive. For example, some plants need a lot of sunlight, while others won’t grow well when drenched in sun. If you don’t pay attention to the plants’ needs, your landscaping may not turn out the way that you had envisioned.

Forgetting to consider the view from all angles.

Most people tend to design their landscaping based on how it will look from the road, but that’s not the only view you should consider. As you plan your landscaping design, keep in mind that your landscaping should look good from inside your house, too.

Planting invasive species.

Don’t choose plants for your yard based on looks alone. It’s important to research the plants that you want to add to your yard to determine how well they grow in your climate and more importantly, how quickly they grow. Many plants that are visually appealing are invasive species, which means they can quickly begin to spread and take over your entire yard if you don’t control them. Consult with your landscaping company to make sure you don’t add these to your yard. Learn about invasive plants here.

Using too much color.

Work with the landscaping company to develop a color scheme for your yard. Most people want to add flowers with color, but you should try to stick to one or two colors instead of choosing as many colors as you can find. Limiting yourself to one or two colors in your garden will help you keep the landscaping neat and harmonious.

Not thinking about maintenance.

As soon as you hire a landscaping company, one of the first conversations you have should be about maintenance. It’s important that you tell the landscaping company how much time you are willing to commit to maintaining your yard. If you don’t want to spend every weekend trimming bushes or pulling weeds, the landscaping company should plan for a low maintenance design. But, if you don’t make this clear up front, you could end up with a yard that requires a lot of upkeep.

Skipping the lights.

If you’re going through the trouble of adding landscaping to your yard, you should make an effort to ensure the landscaping is visible at all hours by adding outdoor lighting. The right lighting can make your landscaping pop even in the middle of the night.
