Denver Landscaping Paving the Way to a Professional Look

April 12, 2017

Homeowners everywhere are looking to improve their outdoor spaces for the coming spring and Denver landscaping can help provide you the opportunity to do the same. Winter will soon be in the rearview mirror giving rise to the season of outdoor entertaining. There is no time better time than the present to spruce up your landscaping in preparation. Whether tormented by a worn area where the grass won’t grow or in need of a new space altogether, pavers and stones can help provide the answer. Create your own patio, turn a path into a beautiful journey, or use eclectic stepping stones to guide both you and guests to your front door.

Paving stones can immediately improve the overall look and value of a home. Complemented by a wide array of uses, from a simple walk, a patio, to an entire driveway the benefits of pavers over a simple concrete slab are endless. Unlike concrete that can weather, stain, and crack over time; paving stones maintain their color, are more weather resistant and can be easily replaced if the need arises. Instead of having to redo an entire driveway due to cracks and discoloration, if needed, a single paver can be replaced with little to no expert assistance. Also, your color pattern is predetermined when selecting concrete for your home but pavers allow you to add vibrant colors or patterns immediately to enhance the overall landscaping surrounding the outdoors.

Stepping Stones

Introducing stepping stones onto your property can help alleviate worn paths in the grass or the tracking of mud and dirt into your home. A few well placed stones will keep guests from tracking through and ruining the hard work used to maintain a beautiful lawn. Stones can add to the landscaping by drawing attention toward a particular focal point while also serving a functional purpose. Like pavers, stones can be selected in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to fit the needs of any homeowner. Versatility and expression are premium benefits over the boring grey concrete of sidewalks.

Retaining Walls

Implementation of a retaining wall is often a necessity depending on the layout of your current yard. However, the wall does not have to take away from the aesthetics of its surroundings and can, in fact, be incorporated into one’s everyday lifestyle creating a multi-use purpose for the block. Like both the pavers and stepping stones, selection of an appropriate block pattern and color will enhance outward appearances. While the lay of the land will determine what height is needed for the structure, the style and pattern of the block used will set the tone. How to Protect Your Denver Hardscaping From Moss

December 14, 2016

Hardscaping your outdoor landscape can instantly brighten up your yard and add character to your patio, but not when they’re covered in moss! Denver hardscapes can fall victim to moss if they are laid in shady spots and exposed to a lot of moisture. But, there are a few ways you can control the growth of moss and prevent it from ruining the appearance of your hardscape surface. Follow these tips:

Sweep regularly.

Moss thrives in area with a lot of dirt and debris, so make sure you take the time to sweep the surface of your hardscape pavers on a regular basis. This will remove anything that may have accumulated on the surface—even if it doesn’t seem like there’s much of a buildup just by looking at it.
If you notice water beginning to pool on the top of your paver surface, make sure you sweep this off to side as well. Call a professional if you believe your pavers are in a spot where water will continue to collect. A professional hardscaper should be able to make adjustments that will allow water to drain off of the surface before moss can settle.

Expose the area to the sun.

Moss only grows in damp, shady spots, so if you want to prevent moss from growing on your pavers, try to position them to be in direct sunlight. If any trees are growing over them, trim them back so they can receive direct light from the sun. This is a simple way to ensure you never create a welcoming environment for moss to grow on your pavers.

Use bleach.

Mix a solution of equal parts water and bleach, and then spray it around your hardscape to prevent the growth of moss. Allow it to sit for about 15 minutes before scrubbing the pavers and rinsing off the solution with water. If you have pets roaming around your yard or small children in the house, make sure to keep them away while you perform this treatment since bleach is toxic. This is one of the more effective ways of preventing moss growth and killing any moss that may have already began to sprout up. See more tips to get rid of moss in the garden and on the lawn.

Keep an eye out for moss.

The moment you begin to see moss, remove it from your pavers. The longer you wait to do so, the more time it has to form roots in between your pavers and cause long-term problems. Make this a part of your regular routine. When you take the dog outside to use the bathroom or bring the garbage to the curb, check for moss. It only takes a few seconds, but if you can remove it right when you begin to see growth, you will save yourself a lot of trouble.

Denver Paver Hardscaping: Brick vs. Concrete

Ready to spruce up your backyard, front yard, or patio? There’s no better way to do so than with pavers, but what kind should you get? The two main materials used to create pavers are brick and concrete. According to My Landscaper, a Denver paver hardscaping company, here are the pros and cons of each of these materials:
Concrete is less expensive.
Concrete is a cheaper material than brick, so of course, concrete pavers will be less expensive than brick pavers. However, there’s more to consider here than just the price. Although concrete is less expensive, it is not as durable as brick. The surface of concrete begins to wear down from foot traffic and environmental elements. Eventually, the smooth finish on the surface will be completely gone, and your pavers will look aged and uneven. Therefore, you may end up spending more over time repairing and replacing concrete pavers than you would have if you invested in brick pavers from the beginning.
Brick is low maintenance.
Concrete pavers stain easily, but brick pavers do not. If you choose brick pavers, there is little work involved with maintaining the appearance of your pavers. However, if you choose concrete, you will need to frequently clean the surface of your pavers to remove stains, dirt, and debris. Learn how to take care of brick pavers.
Concrete is easier to install.
Installing brick pavers requires a little more skill than is needed to install concrete pavers. If you plan on installing pavers on your own, concrete may be the best choice. However, if you are hiring a professional to handle this project for you, this won’t matter because they should be trained to handle any type of material.
Brick retains color.
Homeowners want to know the pavers they lay down today will look the same years from now. But, the color of concrete pavers often fade over time, so the shade of charcoal gray that you choose to match your roof may look dulled down in a few years. Brick pavers, on the other hand, retain their color well over the years, even when exposed to harsh UV rays. Homeowners who choose brick pavers can rest assured knowing the color they fell in love with today will still be there years after the pavers are installed.
Bricks are eco-friendly.
Are you trying to live a greener lifestyle? If so, brick pavers are a perfect addition to your eco-friendly home. When you do decide to get rid of your pavers years from now, brick pavers are usually cleaned and reused. However, concrete pavers cannot be reused and are thrown away once they are removed from the home. If recycling and reusing is important to you, brick is the perfect choice for your pavers.

Hardscaping Options: Your Guide to Pavers

When it comes to choosing a sealer for your Denver hardscaping job, it seems like there are more choices than ever. Paver sealers have three main functions:
  • They help with paver fading from UV rays
  • They enhance the look and color of the pavers by making the apperance look shiny or wet
  • They solidify and stabilize the sand that joins the pavers together
Solvent based paver sealers are the most popular because it has been around the longest. Usually, they will darken a surface and come in matt, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. They last about two years and generally only one coat is needed. However, it may need to be rolled on instead of being sprayed.

Water based paver sealers are relatively new and can be applied with a sprayer. It hardens sand joints very well, however, multiple coats will be needed. The look won’t be as dark or as shiny as a solvent based sealer and can be prone to tire marks on a hot day.

With all the different types and brands of paver sealers, it’s important to ask your Denver hardscaper what will look and protect your pavers most effectively. Have more questions about sealers? Don’t hesitate to call My Landscaper at (720)882-5772.
