Denver Landscaping Company Provides Tips For Keeping Grass Green and Healthy

Look out into your front yard. Do you see a lawn full of lush green grass? It can be difficult to grow and maintain healthy green grass, but having it can instantly transform the look of your yard. According to Denver landscaping company, My Landscaper, here are the secrets to keeping grass green and healthy:

Don’t cut your grass too low.
Many people choose to cut their grass as low as possible so they don’t have to mow the lawn as frequently, but this could actually be one of the reasons why your grass isn’t green and healthy. It’s recommended that you set the mower blade to a minimum of three inches tall. Mowing your lawn too short puts stress on the grass, which affects its ability to resist pesticides, weeds, and harsh weather conditions.

Use fertilizer.
Get in the habit of feeding your grass fertilizer if you want it to continue to thrive in your lawn. But, too much fertilizer can kill your grass, so it’s important to find the perfect balance. Experts recommend using a broadcast spreader, which is a tool used to distribute fertilizer evenly through a yard. This will ensure you don’t pour too much fertilizer in one area and kill a patch of grass unintentionally.

Look for signs of dryness.
You should always keep an eye on your lawn to see how it is responding to your current watering schedule. Even if a watering schedule works for months, it could become ineffective if weather conditions change. For example, if your area is experiencing a bit of a drought, you may need to adjust your watering schedule to account for the lack of rainwater. How do you know when it’s time to do this? Look for signs of dry patches in your yard. Do your footprints leave an impression when you walk across your yard? Is your grass beginning to lose its bright, green color? This could be a sign of dry conditions, so adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Read these tips for watering your lawn the right way.

Use a sharp blade.
Before mowing your lawn, check the blade on your mower to ensure it’s sharp. A dull blade will tear each piece of grass instead of cutting it cleanly. Grass blades with ragged edges are vulnerable to disease and pests that could slowly take over your entire lawn and rob you of having the lush green grass of your dreams. If you find that your mower’s blade is a bit dull, invest in a blade sharpener and sharpen it before you begin mowing your grass. You won’t have to do this often—your mower should only need its blade sharpened after about 8 to 12 hours of use.

Autumn Grass Care Tips from Your Denver Landscape Service Experts

September 21, 2016

Homeowners tend to turn their attention away from their lawns as autumn arrives, because preparing the home itself for the coming cold months seems like a greater priority. But autumn is a crucial time of year for grass. As your Denver landscaping service experts, one of our goals is to offer you information you can actively and immediately use, so here are some grass care tips for autumn.

Using a fertilizer not specifically designed for fall is a mistake many homeowners make. Fertilizing in the fall is tremendously beneficial for a lawn. It helps the lawn survive the winter by encouraging enhanced root development and carbohydrate production and storage. But if you use any old lawn fertilizer that happens to be lying around your garage or on sale at the store, this fertilization could mostly stimulate top-growth, which means the visible blades of the grass could become taller. That’s a problem, because if grass blades are growing significantly in autumn, they are not hardening off and undergoing the natural changes that help grass survive the cold of winter.

One fall lawn care secret is to use a fertilizer specifically designed for autumn. And granular fertilizers are better than liquid fertilizers in fall. Fertilize before your lawn changes from its usual green to a browner winter tint. If you wait too long and your lawn is already brown, skip fall fertilization. When a lawn turns brown for winter, it stops taking in nutrients. At that point, spreading fertilizer is a waste of time and money.

Mother Nature typically provides most or all of the water a lawn needs in autumn. Providing more water than a lawn needs as winter approaches could prevent the grass from hardening off to protect itself, so don't overwater. Lawns do best when there is a gentle weaning off from summer watering. As temperatures start to drop, gradually reduce the amount of water. By October, you probably should water only if there is an exceptionally warm, dry spell. If you have an irrigation system, stop running your preset summer watering schedule and instead turn on the system only as necessary.

Don't cut your grass shorter for fall. Some homeowners lower their mower-blade height in autumn because it is easier to rake leaves off of short grass. This also lowers the odds of winter
snow mold problems. But when you cut grass blades short in autumn, you rob them of their capacity to convert sunlight into nutrients – nutrients they need to store to survive the winter. So, mow your grass the same height in the fall that you do throughout the spring and summer, because the advantages of mowing shorter are not worth the potential for long-term damage.

Organic Lawn Fertilization Information from My Denver Landscaper

May 18, 2016

In Denver, a lawn of perfect green grass is practically an obsession and a neighborhood competition. The problem with the traditional perfect lawn, though, is that it plays havoc with the environment. My Denver Landscaper, LLC concentrates on organic lawn fertilization to create a healthy, green lawn all season long. We share your concern about the environment.

Between 30 and 40 million acres of land in the U.S. are devoted to turf grass, and Americans spend a lot of money – about $40 billion annually – on seed, sod, and chemicals. Much of that money goes to products that are supposed to help grass only in the most superficial of ways and that degrade the soil, pollute the water they reach, and pose serious health threats to humans, their pets, and any wildlife in the area – to include birds. As people become aware of these facts, attitudes towards conventional fertilizers and pesticides are beginning to change.

While many pesticides and herbicides remain legal in the States, more and more people are becoming aware of the strain that they place on the ecosystem. All across North America, people are not only considering going green, but whether the perfect lawn is worth the long-term environmental price we’re paying.

Choosing a soil amendment and a lawn care system that's organic has the purpose of re-establishing and balancing the soil. Soil life provides the nutrients needed for plant life, and plants provide nutrients in the form of carbohydrates and sugars, known as exudates, to the soil. Chemical-based fertilizers have a negative effect on the population of microorganisms – often killing off entire populations and rendering the soil dead and completely void of life.
Practically all chemical fertilizers are salt based, and salt has the same effect on plants as a drought. Excessive salt in the soil reduces the plant's ability to take up water. According to the US Department of Agriculture, National Resources Conservation Service, by enhancing the soil's organic matter with natural fertilizers, a series of soil changes and environmental benefits follow:
  • Surface structure becomes more stable and less prone to crusting and erosion.
  • Water infiltration increases, runoff decreases, and the soil structure improves.
  • Soils rich in organic matter hold 10 to 1,000 times more water and nutrients than the same amount of soil containing only minerals.
By maintaining healthy, organic lawns and gardens in our neighborhoods, we are helping to restore environmental harmony for our children and beyond. Simply by going organic, homeowners hold an enormous potential for restoring the richness of our plant and wildlife habitat that has been destroyed by our carelessness and ignorance. At My Denver Landscapers, it has taken us years of research and development to come up with our organic, eco-friendly program. We’re proud to say that it really works.

Denver Organic Lawn Fertilization

Science is great. Improvements over the past few years have lead to a boom in organic lawn care advancements. Areas like Denver and Boulder have been readily accepting of being eco-friendly, going green, and using organic fertilizers. We love our state, our mountains, our homes, and the land enough to take the time and effort to care of it right. At My Landscaper LLC, we know the benefits being environmentally conscious about the lawn fertilization products we use, and the services we provide. We take the same care and effort in our work as you do in your home.
Here are just a few of the benefits to using organic lawn fertilizer:
  • Completely Safe for People, Pets, and the Environment – Because organic treatments contain no chemicals, they have no adverse effects on earthworms or the good bacterium that helps your grass grow naturally healthy and green. There are zero adverse effects from any living creature coming into contact with organic fertilizer. Even with soil and water runoff, the organic matter is not harmful to fish or other wildlife because there are no bio-hazardous materials like nitrogen involved.
  • Improved Lawn Health – Organic fertilizer stays in your lawn longer than chemical brands. While these chemicals get washed away with watering and rain, organic lawn treatments continue to enrich the soil and encourage growth, releasing carbon dioxide and greatly aiding in the process of photosynthesis. This also strengthens your lawns natural defense against harmful pests and diseases. By doing things the organic way, your lawn will flourish in a vibrant green and lush bed of grass your family can enjoy throughout the Colorado summers.
  • Soil Health and Root Growth – Using organic lawn treatments on your yard slowly releases naturally occurring nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus into the root system. Absorbing these in small quantities results in better, stronger roots growing thicker and greener. Your soil quality will also increase in texture because your lawn will retain moisture longer.
  • Ingredients – Just looking at ingredients in Organic vs. Inorganic fertilizers is enough to let you know which products are best to use.  Inorganic lawn treatments contain things like ammonium sulfate, potassium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium chloride, and potassium sulfate. All of these manufactured chemicals are harmful to people, the environment, pets, and other wildlife. Organic systems contain ingredients like seaweed meal, cottonseed meal, humus, fish emulsion, compost, alfalfa meal, bone meal, and other naturally occurring components that are decomposed by microorganisms in the soil.
Natural, safe, and eco-friendly are the future of lawn care, design, and development.  We are lucky to be in the Denver area, where the residents hold these attributes in high regard. Having a beautifully crafted and cared for lawn doesn’t have to mean being environmentally insensitive as well. You can check out our gallery to see the benefits of using organic lawn fertilizer can have on your lawn. Greener, healthier, and safer – you will not regret going organic for your property in Colorado.
