Denver Patio Kitchen Trends for 2016

June 15, 2016

Patio designs are focusing on outdoor kitchens these days. Your Denver patio (outdoor) kitchen, like the one inside, makes a statement about you. Indoor kitchen appliances and designs are being duplicated for outdoor use. Patio heaters even allow you to use your outdoor kitchen for more than just the summer. My Denver Landscaper, LLC are your Denver service experts to assist you with your patio kitchen design and installation.

With weather-resistant cabinets, built-in refrigerators, sinks, ambient lighting, a high-quality built-in grill, and even ovens, the current trend in patio kitchens has moved far away from the basic grill and a bag of charcoal. It's not about barbecues in the backyard anymore; homeowners are looking for comfort and ease. They are looking at extras like trash shoots, concealed charging stations for their devices, trash compactors, side-burners, bar systems, and infrared technologies.
Outdoor entertaining spaces are being designed with everything needed to prepare and serve a complete meal. Rather than running back and forth to the house to prepare and serve the food and drinks, you can remain with guests throughout.

The patio is not just for grilling the proverbial burger anymore. Multifunctional elements, such as tables with a built-in cooktop, are gaining ground in
outdoor kitchens. Quality furniture, cooking appliances, plumbing products, and lighting are the newest trends. You can go to whatever lengths you can imagine to transform your traditional Denver patio area into a fully functioning outdoor room.

While outdoor kitchens were once exclusively for those lucky enough to be living in warmer climates, patio heaters, rolling carts, modular cooking stands, weather proof materials, and other innovations have made the outdoor kitchen more appealing to those who live in cold weather climates like Denver.

Experts are predicting that in warm places where outdoor kitchens are already prevalent, outdoor living areas will become even more elaborate. As the trend takes hold throughout the U.S., more homeowners in colder climates will also want to create outdoor living spaces that work for them too.

With all the new homes being built these days, the prediction is that consumers will begin to plan their outdoor kitchens along with their homes from the very beginning of the construction process. The outdoor living trend is transforming the American backyard into a functional and private getaway "destination" that you don't have to leave home to enjoy.

No matter the style of your home, outdoor kitchens can be designed to complement your landscape and home, increasing the value of your home in the long run. Wood Material Options for Your Denver Decking Needs

June 8, 2016

When it comes to decking, wood has been the traditional favorite. And while there are more choices now, lots of builders and homeowners still choose economical, natural products for their decking needs. It pays to know your available wood decking options, no matter whether you're breaking ground this summer or still sketching out ideas. Here at My Denver Landscaper, we want to give you some information about the top two wood choices for your decking needs. We are your Denver service experts fully qualified to deliver and maintain impressive, functional, and enduring outdoor environments, to include your new or renovated deck.

Pressure-Treated Lumber

According to Arch Treatment Technologies, a leading producer of wood preservatives, approximately 75% of all new decks are finished with pressure-treated (PT) lumber. So despite all the recent competition in decking materials, this green-tinted wood is still the number one decking material sold today.

Most PT decking is milled from southern yellow pine, and then chemically treated to resist rot, fungus and wood-boring bugs. The widespread popularity of PT lumber isn't surprising, because it's affordable, readily available everywhere, and easy to cut and fasten with nails or screws.

The downside of PT lumber is that it's not very stable. It has a tendency to crack, split and warp. It also requires regular maintenance to prolong the life and look of your deck. This will include an annual power washing and an application of stain or wood preservative every two or three years.

For more than 60 years PT lumber was infused with chromated copper arsenate (CCA), a suspected carcinogen. However, CCA hasn't been used in residential lumber since December 2003. Today's PT lumber is treated with safer, less toxic chemicals, such as alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) or copper azole. A newer carbon-based, nonmetallic preservative is also available in a limited number of products.

Redwood and Cedar

Both of these western softwoods are prized for their natural color and beauty. They are also popular because they aren't pumped full of chemicals or preservatives. Both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to rot, decay and voracious insects.

However, the level of weather- and bug-resistance is directly related to the amount of heartwood in the boards. Heartwood grows closer to the center of the tree, and is relatively hard and very resistant to decay. Sapwood grows in the outer part of the tree, near the bark, and is softer and more susceptible to decay.

The California Redwood Association (CRA) recommends using sapwood-streaked construction common or deck common redwood for decking. For decking that's 100% heartwood, the CRA suggests using construction heart redwood.
Redwood and cedar require an annual power washing and a coat of finish every three to four years. To maintain the wood's natural color you'll have to apply a stain. If you don't apply a stain, both redwood and cedar will eventually weather to a soft silvery gray.

Ideas for Adding a Deck to Your Denver Landscaping Plan

May 11, 2016

If you’re thinking about remodeling your home, or just giving your outdoor landscaping a good makeover, you should consider adding a covered deck to your home. There are plenty of reasons people choose to add a covered deck to their homes. Any of the top Denver landscaping experts can work with you to plan the perfect deck for your home. Here are some ideas you may want to consider if you’re thinking about adding a deck to your home:
  1. Size
How big would you like your deck to be? It may depend largely on the available space in your front yard, or it may be dependent on your ideal landscaping in your front yard. If you’re planning on having a lot of landscaping done all at once, it is a good idea to consult your professional landscaper about the ideal size for your yard. If you have a lot of available space, it is still important to let your landscaper know if you’re looking for a smaller, more quaint deck, or a large one where your whole family can hang out.
  2. Covering
Fully covered decks have a lot of advantages - they keep the hot sun off of your face in the sweltering Denver summers, and they keep snow away from your front door and front windows in the cold winter months. If you do a fully covered deck, do you want it covered by wood, by some kind of roof tiling, or by wood? If you don’t want it fully covered, are you thinking about simple beams or a canopy?
  3. Material
There are lots of materials that you can use for your deck, much like a pergola. Fiberglass, wood, and concrete are popular choices. If you’re thinking wood, what kind of wood would you like to use?
  4. Paint
If you use structural fiberglass or wood, you can paint it a specific color. If you choose wood, you may want the color of the wood to stay as it is. If you’d like to paint it, you may choose to paint it the same color as your house, or a color that complements the color of your house. Consider this carefully before you contact a landscaping expert.
  5. Height
Are you thinking you’d like your deck to be built directly on the ground? Or were you thinking about a slightly raised deck, with a nice staircase up to the deck, level with your front door? This may depend largely on the present structure of the front of your home. Your landscaper will be able to review your options if you’re unsure.

Maintaining Denver Hardscapes and Walkways in Winter

October 21, 2015

If current forecasts hold true, the coming winter in Denver is going to be rough. Snow could be coming early, and often. This makes it difficult not just for neighborhood and city streets, but also for your walkways and other Denver hardscape work around your home. You’ve invested time and money into your walkways, not only for increased value and improved aesthetics, but to also add functioning pathways to your car, garage, entryways, and other areas of your property. Now is the time to prepare for the winter season so you aren’t faced with more serious problems when the snow starts falling.

Check for Potential Problems Early – After the last yard clean up of the fall, get ready for the Colorado winter season by clearing the hardscape paths and walkways of any lawn tools, big and small rocks, and any other debris. This will make clearing your paths much easier when the snow starts to fall and and when ice begins to accumulate. In addition to clearing your yard and walkways , you should also look for cracks and other potential problem areas in your pavers. The extreme Colorado temperature changes can make cracks worsen over the winter months which in turn can make spring repairs expensive. Identifying any cracks now, as well as low spots where water can puddle and collect and fixing them in the fall is far cheaper than waiting until spring.

Drainage System Check – Making sure your drainage system is carrying water away from your hardscapes is extremely important. All water should flow safely away from your home and walkways. If it doesn’t, and water and snow spill over onto your pathways, it can seep beneath. Over the winter months, as this water builds up and freezes, it can make your hardscapes rise in spots and sink in others. This causes cracks and other severe damage.

Safety First – Millions of slips and falls happen every year, along with tens of thousands of injuries. Your walkways and pathways should be cleared with every snowfall and made as safe as possible. If you shovel instead of using a blower or an electric broom, make sure you do not use a metal shovel. Metal shovels can chip away at expensive hardscape work and create safety hazards, not to mention the unappealing damage you’ll do. If your local hardware store only has metal shovels to choose from, find one with a rubber edge.

Leave it to the Pros – Trying to fix the problem areas of your Denver hardscapes yourself isn’t advised. It takes a professional with the proper tools and experience to repair and install your walkways and pathways. Proper leveling and irrigation is necessary to keep your walkways safe throughout the entire winter, without doing additional damage that will cost you more in the later months. Snow removal should also be left to the pros.

Give My Landscaper a call today to find out how we can make your driveways and walkways safe in a fraction of the time!
